How a Quick Reaction Prevented a Major Gas Leak Disaster in Local Austin Shopping Center
Last night, while leaving the gym, our owner caught a faint smell of gas coming from a nearby business in the same shopping center. The storefront was closed, but visible inside were multiple pizza ovens. It didn’t sit right—so instead of ignoring it, he trusted his gut and decided to act.
He ran home to grab his gas detector and came back to confirm his suspicion. The tool quickly registered gas leaking from the rear of the unit. He checked with a nearby sandwich shop for tenant contact info -they took the concern seriously and pointed him in the right direction. Within minutes, he had called 911 and Texas Gas.
Firefighters and gas technicians responded and confirmed the leak: 2 PSI of gas was actively leaking into a ~1,500 square foot space - with open businesses on either side (to put that in context, 2 PSI is the kind of pressure you’d typically find on a high-end estate and not a small commercial unit). Had this continued overnight, the risk of explosion or carbon monoxide exposure would have risen dramatically.
The leak was shut off in time. No injuries. No fire. No property damage. But it was close.
